Artist in Residence 2027

WHO can apply
Professional visual artists, designers and architects are eligible to apply for a two, three or four months stay in 2027.
NOTE: The program is not available for students, or artists in the fields of music, writing, dance and theater.
WHEN
Applications for less than 2 months will not be considered. The time slots will be allocated according to the first and the last day in the months you apply for. If your are invited, you might be offered a different time slot than applied for.
WHAT we offer
We offer excellent accommodation and working conditions. The centre have five private residency houses, one for each artist. Five separate 50 m² studios with a 6 meter high ceiling and a north faced panorama window wall. An additional common studio and carpenters workshop furnished with a good selection of equipment, and power tools are also at disposal.
The artists’ lodgings are fully equipped, and provided with wireless internet access. The residents do also have access to the centres small van.
The residency at the Nordic Artists’ Centre includes a monthly grant of NOK 11.000,-. and round trip travel costs within a limit of NOK 5.000,-. Living and working spaces are for free.
WHERE we are
NKD is located in Dale in Fjaler municipality, in a small fjord on the west coast of Norway. The location is in a rather secluded area, between the fjord and the forest and mountains.
Dale is a typically small west Norway community with basic shops. The nearest town, Førde, is one hour away. Bergen, the western Norway ”capital”, can be reached within three hours. Oslo, the capital of Norway, is one hour away by plane, 8 hours by car and 10 hours by bus.
ABOUT the stay
We host up to five artists at a time, offering space for focused, independent work and artistic development. At the same time, NKD is a small, shared community where everyone contributes to creating a supportive and respectful environment for themselves and others. There are no formal requirements regarding the outcome of your residency. However, during your stay, you will be invited to give a presentation of your work and participate in an open day for the public.
NOTE: We do not run an exhibition program.
Visits are permitted for a small fee, except for partners and children who stay for free. By agreement, the residents have the opportunity to bring pets.
APPLICATION form
Only applicants using our online application will be considered.
Note that groups or linked artists will have to share the stipend of NOK 11.000 by a “one house, one stipend” regulation. The applications will be evaluated by a jury of peers appointed by the NKD board together with the director.
